At Hamilton Health Sciences, our adult and pediatric general medicine units provide care for patients who are experiencing multi-system chronic and acute illnesses. Our nurses on these units are set up for success through a comprehensive on-site orientation program, access to advanced technology, and leadership from experienced health-care professionals and educators. Education requirements
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
- Critical Practice Orientation via HHS required for several medical areas
RPN specific requirements:
- IV administration and IV Management, Venipuncture and Blood and Blood Products Administration course
- Current certificates/community college studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, physical assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, medication administration and transcribing physician orders

Highlights
The interdisciplinary team on these units provides care for a wide range of patients with complex medical issues, including a primarily geriatric patient population at our adult sites, as well as pediatric patients at our McMaster Children’s Hospital.
New nurses entering the profession are welcome in General Medicine as it provides an opportunity to transition from student to nurse through innovative orientation programs and mentorship of experienced nurses.
Our General Medicine units support nurses with gaining confidence to develop their skills and create essential foundational knowledge. This allows nurses to continue to grow in their career and explore the wide range of specializations that HHS offers including critical care, oncology, pediatrics and cardiology.
